My artistic practice explores the role of the grid in forming architectural and semi-architectural structures, and the ambiguity of boundaries that emerges from them. Through this exploration, I investigate shifts in how space is perceived and understood, as well as the process of embedding temporality within the three-dimensional qualities of empty space.
The Ambiguous Wall relief series compresses three-dimensional structures into a two-dimensional visual experience, creating a new dimension of space. These structures possess width and height, yet lack a corresponding sense of volume. As spaces overlap and intersect, new spatial relationships emerge. The grid, in which the distinction between inside and outside becomes blurred, simultaneously separates and connects interior and exterior spaces. In this way, the grid both establishes and dissolves boundaries.
Unlike my earlier relief works, whose forms could be immediately perceived against their rectangular backgrounds, the Ambiguous Wall – Symmetry series is enlarged in scale and installed directly onto the exhibition walls. To fully comprehend the work's form, viewers must adjust their physical distance from it.
As viewers move, the grid is continuously reconfigured through their shifting perspectives. Time and memory permeate these changing spatial relationships, evoking traces of the past and their reconstruction in the present. This process invites viewers to reflect upon their individual identities and memories. Through the architectural qualities of the grid, each passing moment becomes embedded in an ambiguous space that continually transforms in relation to the void.
The empty spaces generated by the grid, the temporality embedded within these negative spaces, and the overlapping layers of time that unfold through the act of viewing all converge into moments of apparent stillness. These moments become sites of unfolding meaning and expressions of continuity, where multiple layers of experience endure beyond the fleeting present.
